Jerry was born on October 30, 1944, in Sylacauga, Alabama, to his parents, William Motley Riggins and Anne Elizabeth Haynes Riggins. It is also here where he met the love of his life, Lynn Gunter, who he wed on July 27, 1968.
Jerry was a proud Vietnam veteran, who served as a military police officer in the United States Army from 1965 -1967. After completing his tour of duty and getting married, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama and began his career in the airline industry. Jerry worked for both Eastern Airlines and Northwest Airlines, from which he retired after 35 years.
Jerry will be remembered for many things - his sense of humor, his buttermilk biscuits, and a deep love for both Alabama football and buttermilk and cornbread - to name a few. However, his greatest legacy by far is that of husband, father, and grandfather.
Ever the family man, “Pawpaw” cherished his wife, kids, and grandkids above all else. There is no one who loved his family more, and there is no deeper love than what he offered. No one cheered louder for the successes of his family, and there were no stronger shoulders to lean on during difficult times.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and his brother William “Bill” Marion Riggins.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lynn Riggins; as well as his son, Gerald “Jerry” Jr., and his daughter, Evelyn “Betsy”.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Trey (Lindsey) Johnson, Emily Johnson, Caden Moore, and Gracelyn Hudson, along with many other family members and friends who will miss him deeply.
In accordance with Jerry’s final wishes, a graveside service for family and close friends will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama, on Monday, August 17 at 1:15pm. Please arrive 15 to 20 minutes prior.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation on behalf of Jerry to the Sylacauga Church of Christ or to your local pet shelter.
For those wishing to contribute to the church, the address is Sylacauga Church of Christ, 200 S. Broadway Avenue, Sylacauga, Alabama 35150.
