OBITUARY

James Olen Shelton

July 27, 1941March 23, 2021

An original and dedicated family man, James Olen Shelton left this world with a legacy that spans generations and geography. He passed away on March 23, 2021, after 79 years of embracing life.

James was a storyteller, with family lore and tales of distant cousins and eras long gone, and he shared bits of his own heart in those recollections. He adored sweets of all kinds, especially old-fashioned candies, and he was a reliable source of treats for untold numbers of grandchildren. He created a legacy, from humble beginnings and a knack for human connection, and his home improvement business expanded successfully for decades.

Our Grumpy was a tender soul, kind and gracious, and his sense of humor left us all with classic, slightly inappropriate tunes and rhymes that even the youngest great-grandchildren know to request at family gatherings. His spirit continues, with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, and Texas,

James is preceded in death by his parents James Thomas and Roberta Moates Shelton; son, Thomas Shelton; and siblings, Shelba Nivens, Jack Shelton, and Tommy Shelton.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his soul mate and devoted wife of 51 years Patricia Poe Shelton; children, Belinda Averitt, Greg Shelton, Theresa Lacey, and Terry Shelton; siblings; Nina Wilson, Glenda McDonald, Joe Shelton, and Janice Burns; as well as a plethora of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The measure of a life is in love, and we all love and miss our James.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 26, 2021 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo). A Funeral service will occur at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo) at 12:00 pm, followed by burial at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Maylene, Alabama.

Dear Shelton Family, James and my father-in-law, R.J. Owens, were friends for decades. They worked together at times. Kenneth, my husband (deceased) loved to hear James's stories and tall tales. His laughter was contagious, and his humor unfailing. I know that you guys are grieving your loss, but Heaven has gained a good man. My condolences, Kayren Lovelady Owens.
