John Samuel Henry Sr.
July 28, 1944 – June 6, 2020
John Samuel Henry Sr., age 75, of Calera, Alabama, passed away at home surrounded by family on June 6, 2020. He grew up in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania with six siblings. John served his country in the US Navy on the USS Tripoli. While overseas John earned the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (1960), a Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, as well as a Navy Unit Commendation. After the war in Vietnam John returned home to his loving wife Caroline Henry. He began a career in carpentry, building cabinets, and they raised their young family in Helena, Alabama. John was a member of Kingwood Church in Alabaster where he was part of the Nifty Fifty group and taught children's Sunday school.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, and soul mate Caroline Marie Henry; parents, Russell and Perma Vanbuskirk Henry; brothers, Alton Henry, Bruce Henry, and Mark Henry; sisters, Mary Henry and Bobbie Henry; and grandchildren, Robyn Harris and Kayla Cummings.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his daughters, Cammie Gustin (Chris), Barbara Mills, and Joy Cummings (Steve); sons, John Henry Jr. and Bruce Henry (Renee); thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice Simpson and Leona Mylnek; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Southern Care Hospice for the support and care they provided.
A committal service for John Henry will be held Monday, June 15, 2020 at Alabama National Cemetery at 11:00 am.
