S.M. MAHAN, JR Mike “Doc” Mahan

On June 29, 1934, a cyclone hit Birmingham, Alabama and brought with it Stanley Michael Mahan, Jr., better known to many as Doc Mahan. After living up to his adventurous beginnings, on July 24, 2018, he left this world peacefully surrounded by his family. He lived his 84 years as a resident of his beloved Montevallo and Brierfield, where he served for decades as family dentist, volunteer fire chief, historian, collector, community leader, musician, story maker and story teller.

He made a home with wife, Georgia girl Linda Chambers Mahan, at Montebrier, on the banks of Mahan Creek in Brierfield, Alabama, where he raised two daughters, Miki Mahan Heaton (Hud) and Stann Mahan Maraman (Neal). Later, he made sure his three grandsons, Michael Schneider, (Julie), Jacob Garris (Morgan), and Jesse Garris, enjoyed the same beautiful land and adventures that the Mahan family had enjoyed there since the early 1800’s. He was even blessed to see his great-granddaughter, Caroline Schneider play on the same creek banks.

Education was very important to Doc who graduated from Auburn University (1957), University of Montevallo (1961) and UAB School of Dentistry (1966). He continually encouraged others to learn, be it in higher education or by life’s experiences.

Doc had a compassionate heart, often helping others at his own sacrifice, and worked to offer comfort and help to many who suffered with dental complications. He hosted a Dentistry from the Heart charitable event at his office for many years, where he and other dentists, community members, and churches volunteered long hours to provide basic dental care for hundreds of people in pain who could not afford to pay for needed services themselves.

To honor and continue his work, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a fund that has been established at Mahan Creek Dental named DMD Fund (Docs Magnanimous Dentistry). This fund will continue Doc’s legacy and ensure that those in need will not suffer from dental pain because they cannot afford dental care. Please make donations through “Go Fund Me” DMD Fund (Docs Magnanimous Dentistry) or checks payable to DMD Fund and mail to Miki Mahan Heaton at 971 Blowing Cave Rd, Gurley, AL 35748.

Services will be held at Montevallo First United Methodist Church, 861 Middle Street, Montevallo, AL, Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 9:45,am. All are invited to join the family for a light lunch following the service at Montebrier, 19275 Hwy 139, Brierfield, AL to celebrate the life of Doc Mahan. A private burial for family will occur after the luncheon.

We are so saddened to hear the news about Doc. He was a wonderful man who touched so many lives in very positive ways. We shall miss him dearly. There is one memory of Mike that I will forever cherish. It lifted not only my spirits but others who were present as well.. It happened in Ecuador while we were on a mission trip together. Each evening our group would gather to reflect on the day. I don't recall what actually happened that lead to what Mike did but I will never forget that just at the right time he sang the Doxology, inviting all of us to join in. It was exactly what we needed to hear. Mike helped so many folks and was an inspiration to those who knew him, including both of us. Linda our sympathies and prayers are with you and the family in the days ahead. May God grant you his amazing Grace and all the strength to see you all through to the other side of this very difficult time. God bless.

My thoughts and prayers are with Linda,Miki, and Stann..I love you all. I have so many fond memories of Mike (too many to share) as we grew up together. My children share many memories as our children grew to know one another as well . He was so kind to my mother (Mildred) on many occasions and was so helpful to me when we moved back to Montevallo...He shall be dearly missed

I am thinking of Mike's family with great sympathy at his loss. Mike leaves a wonderful legacy and he has impacted many lives including mine and Ed's. He was very fortunate in meeting Linda who was the perfect mate for him.
There are many things that could be said about all the contributions Mike made to the community as well as fun memories of times past which I could share and I know many others will. What may not be said is how thoughtful Mike was. As busy as he was he took the time to help and remember friends. I've never forgotten the personal note he sent to Ed after Ed's father's death nor the personal note he sent me after Ed's loss. I'm sure he did the same for many other friends after the loss of a loved one.
