Virginia Ruth Lee Young

Virginia was born in 1937 to James Milford Lee and Johnie Ruth Collum Lee in Calera, Alabama. The oldest of five children, Virginia was a conscientious and responsible young lady. So everyone was astounded when she up and eloped at age sixteen in April of 1953! She was happily married to her true love, William Riley Young until his passing in 2008.

Virginia was a loving mother to three children: William Michael Young, Vicki Lee Young Owens, and Lori Ruth Young Lindstrom. She held it all together as they moved across the country, following her husband in his service in the Marines, then his involvement in the Gemini/Apollo space program from Huntsville, Alabama to Titusville, Florida. She had to pack up and move so many times we lost count. Virginia transported her family with three children, and a dog, as far out as Phoenix, Arizona. Her strength and devotion was legendary!

She has eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson (with another on the way!). Everyone called her Ma, even if she wasn't their grandmother! She was the best rocker/lullaby singer in the world... she had loads of practice!

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, William Riley Young, in 2008. Her first child, William Michael Young passed away in July, 2025. Her beloved sisters, Jane and Linda, also preceded her death.

Virginia is survived by her brother, Jim Lee (Peggy); sister, Jonna Bryan (Pat); two daughters, Vicki Lee Owens (Jim), Lori Ruth Lindstrom (Tim); eight grandchildren, Bill Young (Alston), Nathan Owens (Lindsay), Joshua Owens (Joy), Ryley Miller (John), Daniel Owens (Brooke), Susane Banissi, Cameron Banissi, and Sean Banissi; fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Services for Virginia will be held on Monday, November 3rd at Rockco Funeral Home at 3715 AL-25, Montevallo, Alabama. Visitation will be at 12:30 pm followed by a service at 1:00 pm. Virginia will be laid to rest at Shelby Memory Gardens.
