Dr. Alex Martin Johnson, 72, of Montgomery went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 1, 2016. He is preceded in death by his parents; Bernard and Ocy Dee Johnson, his brother; Marvin Johnson, and his son; Bryan Johnson. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Debbie Johnson, and his children; Jill Wallace (Tim), Robert Johnson (Elizabeth), and Courtney Ficken (Charles), as well as nine grandchildren: James, Will, and Josh Wallace, Noah, Alex, and Chloe Johnson, and Anders, Coleman, and Callie Ficken, and his brothers; Wade and Barney Johnson.
Johnson graduated from Robert E. Lee High School where he was a two time state football champion. He then went on to study at Samford University and play football under Coach Bobby Bowden. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and served as a physician for 30 years in private practice as a board certified OB/GYN. He was proud to serve his country in the United States Air Force and later as a physician at the V.A.
Johnson received the Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award for Christian Leadership in Athletics and was honored to be a recipient for both the Man of the Year and the Lee High School Hall of Fame.
Johnson served on the board of Jackson Hospital, the Jimmy Hitchcock Award Committee, YMCA Camp Chandler, the Metro YMCA, and Lake Martin R.V. Park. He was a deacon at Morningview Baptist Church and was a beloved Sunday School teacher at Eastern Hills Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held at Eastern Hills Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 5th from 9:30-11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with a burial at Greenwood Serenity Cemetery.
Pallbearers include James, Will, and Josh Wallace, Noah and Alex Johnson, Dr. Chip Armstrong, and Marvin Thornton.
