Artie Van Fleet Savage, 99 of Montgomery, passed away on November 26, 2022. She was a lifelong resident of Montgomery, interposed by 7 years in Jackson, Mississippi. Artie was a retired secretary for the Montgomery County Extension Service. She had a wide array of hobbies and interests such as playing bridge, being an avid walker, delivering Meals-On-Wheels for 25 years, bible study, but most of all enjoying spending time with her family and church. She was preceded in death by her husbands John D. Van Fleet and James Hugh Savage; parents Henry Marvin Pirtle Sr., and Susan Mary Hocker Pirtle; sisters Elizabeth Phibbs and Carolyn Elgin; brothers Henry M. Pirtle Jr, Hocker Pirtle, and Renfrow Pirtle; granddaughter Laura Van Fleet Sawyer.
She is survived by 4 sons, Mark Van Fleet (Patricia), Steve Van Fleet (Rita), Paul Van Fleet (Debbie) and Ed Van Fleet (Debbie); grandsons Daniel Van Fleet (Duski), Chris Van Fleet and Jared Van Fleet; granddaughters Laura Van Fleet Franklin (Adam), Holly Van Fleet Dede (Bernard), Brittany Van Fleet Parcell (Corey)
Artie slipped into the presence of God, whose lovingkindness is everlasting, late Friday night in her sleep. Her family is confident that she entered by His grace alone, a passage paid for in full by the sacrificial gift of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who conquered death and rose again. She will be missed in this life by all that ever knew her. Artie was blessed to have a loving, successful marriage of 47 years to John D. Van Fleet, followed by several happy years of marriage to James Hugh Savage, whom she had previously dated for over two years, prior to meeting John in the mid-1940s. She and John successfully raised four sons, all of whom survive her.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Leak Memory Chapel on Saturday Dec 3rd at 10 AM with a family and friends visitation one hour prior to the service. A private family only graveside will be held immediately following at Alabama Heritage Cemetery.
The family encourages memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, to Grace Presbyterian Church Montgomery, American Cancer society.
