Bascom McDonald (“Mack”) Brooms, age 68, of Mathews, Alabama, passed away on June 19, 2019. Mack was born on April 26, 1951, in Andalusia, Alabama. He grew up in Andalusia and graduated from Andalusia High School in 1969. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Alabama in Anthropology. In his career in anthropology and archaeology, he worked for the Alabama Historical Commission and then became a faculty member at Troy University, where he also led countless archaeological projects for the Troy University Archaeological Research Center. He retired in 2010.
He was a great story-teller, an avid Alabama football fan, and he enjoyed gardening, travel, the beach, soccer, dogs, and good food. He had a great appreciation for nature and wildlife, and he enjoyed watching the various animals around his property. He had a large fund of general knowledge that was frequently entertaining and enlightening. He left behind family, friends, colleagues, and students whose lives were greatly enriched from knowing him.
Mack was preceded in death by his parents, Barney Bascom Brooms and Gladys Anderson Brooms, his son, Paul Martin Brooms, and his sister, Elinka Brooms Warnicke.
Mack is survived by his wife of 49 years, Molly Mahone Brooms; his son, Anderson Grant Brooms; his daughter-in-law, Rebecca Pitts Brooms; grandchildren, Madison Victoria Brooms, Isabelle Ashton Brooms, and Grant Michael Brooms; his treasured dog, Lulu, along with extended family and many wonderful friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 2:00pm at Leak Memory Chapel, with Visitation 1 hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Kidney Foundation.
