Amos Berney Jones, Jr. – “Berney” age 87 passed away in Montgomery, Alabama on December 2, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born April 11, 1933 to Allie Rice Jones and Amos Berney Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents. Berney is survived by his sister Julie Jones Crane, her husband Edwin Landon (Lanny) Crane, his nephews John Crane (John Peters), Robert Crane (Elizabeth) , Gene Crane (Susan) and Berney Crane (Kristen), great nieces and nephews Ford, Benton, Alice, Hamilton, Carolyn, Christopher, Brooks, Landon and Anderson Crane.
Berney graduated from McCallie School in Chattanooga and then attended Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. In 1957 he received his degree in radio and television from the University of Alabama. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
He worked briefly at WSFA-TV before moving to New York City in 1961. During his
career in New York he worked as an off-broadway stage manager and later in
television as a producer/director with Teletape Productions whose offices were in the same building as Sardi’s restaurant. Late Friday afternoon gatherings at Sardi’s became a tradition for the television people. As co-workers began to move to other jobs Berney organized an annual Teletape reunion on the first Friday in October. The reunion continued for approximately 50 years with the final one
in 2019. One of his favorite assignments during his years at Teletape Productions was being a member of the production staff of Sesame Street and becoming friends with Big Bird and the show’s other characters. Berney was a longtime member of the Directors Guild of America. He was a passionate New Yorker and loved showing off the city to his family and friends.
Berney retired to Montgomery in December 2019 and lived at Oak Grove Inn where he quickly began making new friends.
A private family service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Andrew M. Rowell officiating. Memorials may be made to the Montgomery Area Food Bank, 621 Trade Center Street, Montgomery, Alabama 36108 or the Salvation Army, 900 Maxwell Blvd., Montgomery, Alabama 36104.
