Billy Joe was honorably discharged from the Army, and he went on to work for the Montgomery Fire Department for 20 years. He then worked with the State Highway Department for another 20 years.
He served as a deacon at Highland Gardens Baptist Church, Morningview Baptist Church, and Santuck Baptist Church. Billy Joe volunteered at the Santuck Fire Department, and he enjoyed gardening and taking care of his property.
Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Milton and Thelma Farmer McWhorter, brothers, Spencer, Ottis, and Jack McWhorter, sister, Nadeen McWhorter, and his wife of 53 years, Jeanette McWhorter.
He is survived by son, George McWhorter, daughter, Sharon N. King (Leslie), grandchildren, Patrick McWhorter (Jessica) and Shayla Hoff (Shelby), and multiple great grandchildren. He is also survived by brother, James McWhorter (Diane), and sisters-in-law, Mary and Jeanette McWhorter.
Visitation will be held at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109, US, on March 17, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
