Born and raised in Montgomery, Charles graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and later attended the University of Alabama. After earning his Master's Degree in Education he went to work at Troy University. He eventually relocated to Ypsilanti, Michigan where he began teaching at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, where he later moved. Over the course of 20 years Charles taught English, directed a writing center and taught film classes.
Upon retirement he returned to Montgomery where he relaxed, began to redo the family home, and connected with old friends. He loved literature, was an avid movie buff (especially horror films), enjoyed gourmet cooking (and eating), and most importantly loved the Lord
Charles was a brilliant, kind hearted man who dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring countless students who passed through his classrooms, positively impacting the lives of so many.
A good son, a good brother, a loyal friend- his presence in this world will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother; Charles Lewis Avinger Sr and Ruth Franklin Avinger.
He is survived by his only sister Sandra Leigh Avinger also of Montgomery, the absolute love of his life his rescue pup "Little Bert", and countless friends across the country especially his best friend from childhood, Tom DeClue of Nashville, Tenn.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday August 28, 2021 at Leak Memory Chapel with a visitation at 1:00 P.M followed by Chapel Service at 2:00 P.M. with a graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery immediately following.
A bright star has been dimmed. The world wont be the same without him in it.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Leak-MC.com for the Avinger family.
