Charles B. Carter

October 20, 1943April 29, 2012

Charles Bernier "Mark" Carter, beloved husband, father and servant of God, died peacefully at home surrounded by family members on April 29. 2012 after an extended illness. He was 68. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Gwen McGlamery Carter and their daughter, Adrienne and her husband, Brian Asire, cousins Rick Fuller of Mobile, and Gail Fuller of Maryland, and leaves behind countless friends. Mark was born on October 20, 1943 in Knoxville, TN, and after graduating from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Following his military service, he found his way to Montgomery and became involved in radio broadcasting. Many country and bluegrass music fans will remember him as "Mark Robbins" from his days in the early 1970's and 1980's as a disc jockey at WBAM-AM, The Big Bam, who always ended his show with the hope to his listeners "that the good Lord will take a likin' to you." In addition to his radio show, Mark hosted numerous bluegrass festivals throughout the southeast. In the 1990's, he was general manager of WACV-AM, Montgomery's first all news-talk radio station. In 1998, he was elected the first mayor of the Town of Elmore and served in that position until 2008. Mark was a well respected member of the Elmore community and his actions as mayor lead to quick growth of the town. He was especially proud of creating the annual Christmas lights and nativity display, and twilight Easter egg hunt in the city park. He also served 12 years on the board of the Elmore Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the International Exchange Club-Wetumpka Chapter. Mark ministered to people at various groups and churches as the comic good ole boy character known as "Bubba." Visitation will be Monday, April 30, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Leak-Memory Chapel with a memorial service to be held Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. The Reverend Dr. John Brannon, pastor of Harmony United Methodist Church in Titus and director of Grace and Peace Ministry, and Reverend Glenn Pugh will officiate. Reverend Steve McInnis will lead the music. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Asire, Cliff Beasley, Clint Belden, Brian Bozeman, Glenn Chestnutt, Clark Havard, Ken Klinger, Dimitri Polizos, Clay Redden, Edwin Sanford, Will Sanford, Wynn Sanford, George Tatum, Steve Witherington, and the Elmore Eagles Reunion Group.

Mark, I am sure you are being missed by all your family and friends. I wish the boys would have gotten to know their Grandpa but I am certain that you are watching down on Joey, Robbie and Korey (and great granddaughter Emily) now. May you rest in peace and watch over us all.

"Bubba" entertained a lot of folks with his ministry at Blue Lake. He will be missed here, but as someone said in FB, I'm sure the angels in heaven are laughing their wings off right now!
