I was deeply saddened to learn of Charles death and although I have not seen Charles in years, I have always been sure to ask about him when I would often see his brother Fred.  I worked for Charles and Fred for several years in the early 70s at McMurtrey Shell while attending Jeff Davis High School and Auburn University at Montgomery.  Charles was a wonderful boss and someone whose mentoring and friendship I've always fondly remembered.  I pray that Ms. McMurtrey and family may be at peace with the loss of Charles.

I cannot tell you how surprised I was to see Charles' name in the obituaries yesterday.  I know Harry was probably sitting there urging him to come on.  At least I know Harry is in good company with his friends.  I pray for courage, comfort, peace and strength for all of the family.  Melva, you and your family had a wonderful man to share your lives and I know you will certainly miss him, as will his many friends.  God be with you and bless you abundantly.

Prayers are with all of you at this time.  Charles and his brother Fred made it such a pleasure to visit their Shell station.We could always trust their advice and their work.  Their sense of humor and friendliness made it a special stop for my children, too.  I'll never forget those days - Some things are never the same again!!

Melva and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember God is close to the brokenhearted.  Mr. Charles was such a nice and kind man.  He will be missed by everyone at the Crump Center.  We will all see him again in Glory.

Charles, Charley as we called him in the Navy, was always funny and comical.  I am glad that I have a video from the Navy days to remember him.

I was saddened to read of Charles' passing.  He, Fred, and their staff took care of my mom's cars throughout the '70s and '80s.  I could always depend on them to be there if she needed any assistance or work done. Doing business with the McMurtreys was never a hassle...it was a pleasure.  I enjoyed going to their Shell station and talking with Charles because, not only was he a good mechanic, he was a good man. RIP

Charles and Fred were great customer's to me. But more importantly they had a Great since

A special uncle we all dearly loved, we have many happy memories of our time spent with Uncle Charles, Aunt Tinky and all of our cousins.  We will be there to say adieu as you climb the stairs to heaven.  Love always, Robin, Dick, Courtney and Andrew Wells.

Charles and Fred had a wonderful Shell Station, they helped so many
folks with their cars, and with their smiles and good cheer.  It was a fun place
to go and feel good when you left.  Whatever repairs/services done, they were
done right, on time and with a smile.  It was always a pleasure to visit with them, and they handled our various auto emergencies quickly and with  a smile.  Charles was a gentle man, and we are sure God welcomes him home with open arms.   Caryll and Ken Carrick

My condolences to the entire McMurtrey family, especially to Charles, my former classmate and friend. Mr. McMurtrey was a kind man, loved by his community, and will be greatly missed by many.

It seemed like a chapter had closed on my childhood when McMurtrey Shell closed.  It was always such a pleasure to see you and Fred there. You will be missed.

Don and I are so sorry to learn of Charles's passing! He was a wonderful, friendly, helpful man. We loved talking to him when he operated McMurtrey Shell. We have really missed that place. Charles always was so sweet and cheerful. He was so thoughtful of others. My heart goes out to the family. Bless all of you as you go through this difficult journey.
