Charlotte Lee Lindberg, 78, of Montgomery, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. She was born on November 9, 1944 in St. Louis, MO to Walter William Lindberg and Ruth Ann House Lindberg. Charlotte lived with her sister, Nancy Lindberg Bull and her brother-in-law David Bull since the death of her parents in 2005 and 2006. Although mentally challenged and having autism, Charlotte lived a full and happy life.
Charlotte's father worked with the Department of Defense in civil service and his position required him to transfer in his employment. During Charlotte's childhood her family lived in Indianapolis, IN, Ft. Walton Beach, FL and Huntsville, AL. Special education services were extremely limited during the 1950s and 1960s but her parents worked hard to find programs to educate Charlotte appropriately. They encouraged Charlotte to always do her best and one of her favorite statements was "I'm doing the best I can."
In 1967 her father retired from civil service and worked in administration at McInnis School, which served mentally challenged students. Charlotte enjoyed riding the school bus and attended O.F. Wise Evaluation Center and the Adult Activity Center. She developed important skills as she crafted belts, button necklaces, latch hook rugs and packaged fishing lures for a work project.
Charlotte's parents encouraged her to develop social skills and speak comfortably with others. She greeted everyone with a smile, held her hand out and firmly said "Shake hands." Her autism developed the unique skill of memorizing calendars. After someone told her their birthday she would tell them the day of the week they would celebrate the next year. Charlotte also liked to keep things in their "proper place". She would spend an hour to unload the dishwasher and carefully put up dishes and silverware exactly where they belonged.
Dogs played an important role in Charlotte's life. Her childhood family dog, Flicka, was a cute mixed breed who lived for 16 years. After moving in with her sister Nancy, Charlotte loved when the family dogs sat down near her so she could pet them. She enjoyed seeing dogs on television and always referred to them as "doggies". Charlotte watched The Golden Girls every night before bed and also liked any movie on the Hallmark Channel. She attended Asbury Methodist Church with her parents for many years. Since living with her sister, Charlotte enjoyed special events at Aldersgate Methodist Church.
Charlotte is survived by her brothers James "Jimmy" Lindberg (Ruth) and William "Bill" Lindberg (Janet) and her sister Nancy Bull (David). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her very much.
