Mr. Meyer and his family later moved to Tampa, Florida where he graduated from Hillsborough High School and helped begin the family business Meyer’s Nursery which still operates today.
Mr. Meyer entered the U.S. Air Force during World War II. While stationed at Napier Field near Dothan, Mr. Meyer met and married his beloved wife Winifred Weathers. During their 65-year-marriage, they lived in Dothan and Troy before finally settling in Montgomery. After the war, Mr. Meyer worked in the grocery business, starting out with A&P Grocery in Troy and later working with Hudson-Thompson, Inc. in Montgomery. He managed the Big Bear Supermarket on Mt. Meigs Road in Montgomery for many years before moving into a supervisory position with them in the final years of his career. Mr. Meyer was devoted to his family and was often called upon as the family repairman/carpenter – which he loved doing.
He was a selfless caregiver to his wife during her battle with dementia in the last years of her life. Mr. Meyer was a devout Christian whose life exemplified the fruits of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22, “…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control”. He was ordained as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Troy, Alabama and later joined Morningview Baptist Church in Montgomery where he also served as a deacon and in various ministries of the Church. For the past few years, Mr. Meyer enjoyed attending Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Jay, Florida with his daughter and son-in-law. When his physical body began to fail him, he became a prayer warrior for those he encountered. “Well done good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21.
Mr. Meyer was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Phillip W. Meyer and Marshall Meyer, and sister Leola Meyer Arnold. He leaves behind his daughter Beth and son-in-law Lennie Howard, grandson Heath Howard, granddaughter Leah (Louie) Hartley, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family.
