Larry was born on August 29, 1951, in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late Waverly and Louise Poole Summerlin. He spent his life rooted in the Montgomery community where he was a well-known custom home and commercial builder, making many lifelong friends in that industry. He will be remembered for his love of family and his faith.
Larry was a long-standing member of Frazer Church, where he loved to serve and faithfully participated in men’s Bible studies. His faith and church community were an important part of his life. He was instrumental in growing Transformation Montgomery, serving on the board as well as volunteering weekly with home construction needs.
He is survived by his daughters, Shanna Byrd, April Sexton (Grant), and Shea Terry (Charles). Larry was a proud grandfather to Gage Bendinger, 25; Max Bendinger, 21; Tanner Byrd, 20; Ella Grace Byrd, 17; Kate Sexton, 15; Den Terry, 2; and Curt Terry, 4 weeks. He is also survived by his brother, David Summerlin (Debbie) of Wetumpka, Alabama and his sister, Tammy Shaw (Brent) of Fairhope, Alabama.
Larry loved spending time with his girls and grandchildren, building, enjoying the beach, and traveling. Later in life, his friends at Respite became like family to him. Nothing made him happier than going to “work” at Respite, where he formed meaningful friendships and found great joy in being part of that community. The family will forever be grateful to the volunteers at Respite for loving him so well over the years.
Funeral services will be held at Frazer Church on Friday, March 20, 2026. Visitation will be at 2 pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Respite Montgomery or Respite for All in Larry’s memory.
