Dale was born in Tallassee on December 8, 1937 to Howard and Ruth Thompson Carroll. He graduated from Tallassee High School in 1955 where he lettered in track and also played baseball and football. He worked for the Tallassee Mill, Radio Hospital and as a salesman for Southeastern Radio Parts. He served part-time in both the Army and Air National Guard from 1956 to 1963. In 1966, he began his career with the U.S. Postal Service where he was a carrier, clerk, LSM operator, supervisor, tour superintendent and an engineering specialist at the main facility. He retired in 2008 after 42 years.
He enjoyed playing church softball, post office league bowling and weekend golf with as early a tee time as possible. He loved weekly dinner visits to Ixtapa Restaurant with his children and grandchildren, Alabama football, telling jokes to anyone who would listen, staying informed on the weather, postal retirees' luncheons and attending Sunday School and church services at Heritage Baptist Church.
Known affectionately as Daddy, Grandaddy, G-Dad or just plain Dale, he was loved deeply by his family; especially his grandchildren with whom he held individual and unique bonds and rarely, if ever, missed any performance or activity in which they were involved. You could find him with a video camera in hand making sure to capture all of life’s special moments. He was very proud of each grandchild and regularly bragged on their accomplishments.
Dale was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Talley Carroll; parents Howard and Ruth Carroll; sisters Rita Carroll McCarley and Barbara Carroll Smith and brother Rickey Allen Carroll. He is survived by his three children, Curtis (Kim) Carroll of Montgomery, AL, Pam (Wade) Nolan of Wetumpka, AL, Geoff (Laurie) Carroll of Acworth, GA; grandchildren; Russell (Hannah) Carroll of Dallas, GA, Jamie (Ted) Flotte of Mobile, AL, Jessica (Eric) Bader of Nashville, TN, Carley Nolan of Wetumpka, AL and Ana Carroll of Acworth, GA; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Lucas and Mason Carroll, Reese Flotte, and Mary Charles and Lottie Bader; brother Wayne (Bette) Carroll of Wetumpka, AL; and many nieces and nephews.
