For 20 years he was enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant. He devoted his career as an ophthalmology surgical technician. While serving in the Air Force he received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal, among others. Upon retiring he owned a sewing machine and vacuum cleaner repair shop.
He is survived by his daughter Tracy Lee Whitacre, son David Roy Whitacre ( Lesley), his grandchildren Christa Lee Whitacre, Abigail Hope Hinson, Jessi B Whitacre, his sister Nancy Mitcham, and his nieces and nephews along with his extended family Billy and Annette Bruner and family.
He had a passion for woodworking and frequently made gift items for family and friends who admired his craftsmanship. He was also an avid watcher of Nascar. He was known for his quick wit, his giving heart, and his kindness towards others.
