Derward Bird

Derward O. Bird, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 6th, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 94 years old.

Born on April 18th, 1932, in Montgomery, Alabama, Derward lived a life defined by love, dedication, strength, and service to others.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, including service during the Vietnam War. His military career was marked by extraordinary dedication and commitment. Among his many honors and decorations were the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, and Air Force Overseas Service Ribbons.

His service was more than a list of medals and accomplishments—it was a reflection of the courage, sacrifice, and character he carried throughout his life. He served his country proudly and continued to demonstrate that same strength and devotion in everything he did.

To his family, however, he was much more than a decorated veteran. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, a source of wisdom, laughter, guidance, and unconditional love. He cherished his family and leaves behind memories that will be treasured for generations to come.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Beryl Bird; his son Donald Bird; his daughters Debbie Edwards (Jimmy), Dana McKenzie, and Daneen Sheffield (Stafford); his grandsons Brandon Bird, Justin DeFee, Hunter DeFee, and Austin Maggard; his granddaughters Amy Lowry, Ashley Smith, Syndney Verka, and 17 great grandchildren and many other family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Though his earthly journey has come to an end, his legacy of service, courage, love, and devotion will live on in all who knew him.

He proudly served his country. He deeply loved his family. And he will be forever missed.
