Dorothy was born July 24, 1930, in Montgomery, Alabama, into a loving and close-knit family as the fourth of seven siblings. Dot graduated from Lanier High School (1948), then became a Registered Dental Hygienist. She was married to John Blair Hawthorne for 46 years until his death in 1998, and they lived on McGehee Road in the Snowdoun area from the time they were married in 1952. Their home (fondly called “The Ponderosa”) became the gathering place for both sides of the family (Hawthorne and Green).
As a woman of deep Christian faith, she delighted in detailed, almost scholarly Bible Study along with her morning devotionals. She was happiest when extending her extraordinary gift of hospitality and showering God’s love on all she met. Many friends of her children and grandchildren call her “Memaw “or “Aunt Dot”, because she welcomed them as a family member the moment she met them.
“Indubitably”, Dot was an exceptional and charismatic person, and created love wherever she was. She was always up for cards and games (playing to win), a good joke, a birthday party with full-on decorations and balloons, and taught countless little ones how to make rolls and cinnamon rolls at her side. She “never did anything halfway” and even though she was the youngest of the “Dolly Sisters” (or the Green Girls, as they were known), she was definitely “the big director.”
Dot is survived by her brother Dr. Richard Green, her children Janice Hawthorne Timm (Robert), Dorothy Blair Hawthorne, John Blair Hawthorne, Jr. (Norma), and Marjorie Bliss Ellis (Christopher), her grandchildren Anna, Amber, Sarah, Macon (Kaitlyn), Jesse, Rachael (Jeffery), and Carly, her great-grandchildren Dakota, Collin, Ellie, Samantha, Abel, Maesyn, Colson, and Oakley, one great-great grandchild, Crimson, and numerous nieces and nephews, along with their spouses, children, and grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her beloved siblings Dr. George Bliss Green, Marjorie Green Scorey, Janice Green Mahoney, Dr. James N. Green and Dr. Harris Reed Green.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Snowdoun United Methodist Church, (190 Snowdoun Chambers Rd, Montgomery , AL 36105), where she has been a loving and active member since 1952.
A celebration of life memorial service for Dorothy will be held Friday, January 28, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Rd, Montgomery, Alabama 36109. There will be a private, family only burial at Oakview Cemetery in Lowndesboro.
