Dorothy Lois “Dot” Smith, age 102, passed away on August 16, 2026. Born on December 16, 1923, in Columbus, Georgia, Dot lived most of her life in Montgomery, Alabama, where she built a long and meaningful life centered on faith, family, and love.
Affectionately known as “Mama Dot” by her family, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was one of the great joys of her life, and she loved them deeply. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Smith.
Dot enjoyed the simple things that made life special. She loved gardening and took great pride in tending to the things she planted and watching them grow. She also loved her Sunday afternoons watching NASCAR after church, a pastime that those who knew her will always remember with a smile.
Above all, Dot loved the Lord, and her faith was at the center of her life. She was a longtime active member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, where her faith was strengthened through worship, fellowship, and service. She was also a devoted prayer warrior. She kept many people on her prayer list and faithfully prayed for them each day, laying the needs of family, friends, and others before the Lord. Her faith was not simply something she spoke about—it was something she lived, quietly and consistently, throughout her life.
To her family, she will always be Mama Dot and “Grammy Dot”—a steady and loving presence whose life spanned more than a century and touched generations. Her family is grateful for the many years they were blessed to have her and for the memories, love, prayers, and example of faith she leaves behind.
Dot is survived by her daughters, Judy Patricia Duncan, Mary Lois Smith (Scott), and Donna Jo Fulmer (Daron); grandchildren, Danny Duncan (Jennifer), Lisa Branum (Clay), Bradley Jones (Courtney), Todd Fulmer, Misty Jones, and Ashley Fulmer; great-grandchildren, Benton Blount, Lola Duncan, Cooper Jones, Emma Jones, Rylee Jones, Tessa Brezofski, and Cassidy Brezofski.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Smith; her father, Oscar Bowen; her mother, Sallie Bowen; her sisters, Ruth Sweatt and Betty Hancock; and her brother, Oscar Bowen Jr.
