
Edward Harold Haslam, Jr. passed away on October 2. He was born on November 8, 1929, in Anniston, AL, to Edward Harold Haslam, Sr. and Mary Dover Turner Haslam. He graduated from Anniston High School, attended Auburn University and graduated from Jacksonville State University. Upon graduation he became a U.S. Naval officer specializing in anti-submarine warfare and public information. He was the Navy’s first carrier sonar officer supervising installation of long-range sonar on the USS Randolph. He also served time at the Pentagon as the Naval spokesman for the Under Secretary of Defense. After leaving the Navy, he worked for the State of Alabama, retiring after 22 years.
Ed enjoyed photography, music – especially playing his trumpet - and woodworking. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church for over 40 years before he and Doci moved to Wichita, KS, in 2013 to be close to their grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Docia Lasseter Haslam; daughter Beth Sturm (Tim); two grandchildren, Edward and Claire Sturm; sister-in-law, Marzell Lasseter; and a number of nieces and nephew.
A visitor’s reception will be held on Friday, October 6th at 1pm at First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, followed by the service at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, AL. Leak Memory Chapel directing.
