Baldwin, Ada Elizabeth “Betty,” 84, a resident of Montgomery, AL passed away on June 6, 2016 after a short illness. She was surrounded by her children who reverently released her into the Father’s care. Betty lived in devoted love to her husband, Jim, of 64 years, and became his primary caretaker in the later years of her life. She showed her children and grandchildren what can be accomplished in the ebb and flow of life when a couple lives in faithful love and unwavering respect for one another. As an advertising copywriter at Montgomery Fair/Gayfers from 1965 until her retirement in 1994, Betty worked seamlessly with her husband, inside and outside the home, to care for their large family of five children. One of her many career achievements was to redesign much of the advertising department’s functioning during its transition into the computer age. At a time when computer use was still intimidating for most people, Betty could see the power and benefit of computers for her company and taught herself to use them. She streamlined and redesigned important documents, transforming the efficiency of her department. Not only did Betty have many professional achievements in her retail advertising career at Gayfers, she also created an atmosphere of cohesion in the office and camaraderie outside the office with her extensive involvement in the Retired Gayfer Girls Organization.Betty was a member of First Baptist Church from the time she was in high school until her death. We, Betty's children, want to thank First Baptist Church for the wonderful care provided for our mother; not only from the pastoral staff, but from dear FBC members as well. Betty will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love lives on through her children, family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents Eloise Ramsey and Verdell E. Cunningham and her brother Verdell E. Cunningham, Jr. (Corkey). She is survived by her husband, James B. Baldwin, and her sister-in-law Anne Layton Birchfield; her five children: Pamela Baldwin Ross of Atlanta, GA; James Bruce Baldwin (Mary Ann) of Hillsborough, NC; Patti Baldwin Ricotta of Chatham, MA, Scott Evans Baldwin (Lesia) of Montgomery, AL; Lori Baldwin Arnold of Montgomery, AL. Nieces Diane Cunningham Van Winkle and Kim Cunningham; nephews, Michael and Steve Cunningham; First cousins, Rita Nelms Haynes, Renn Nelms-Ebel and Jim Cunningham. Following a time of visitation with the family from 2:00-3:00 p.m. a Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Leak-Memory Chapel, concluding with a committal service at Greenwood Cemetery on Wednesday, June 15th.
