Elizabeth A. Patterson, a resident of Montgomery, passed away Friday July 24th, 2015. She was born in Washington, D.C. to John and Merle Avery. Liz graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and joined the Bureau of the Budget in 1942. She left the Bureau of the Budget in October of 1946 to join the relief effort in Berlin, Germany with the Red Cross. It was there during the Berlin Airlift that she met her husband the late Col. Archie Rice Patterson Jr. They were married on February 4th 1950. Liz was a loving mother as well as the consummate Air Force officer’s wife following her husband across the country and was a tremendous asset to a very successful career. She was a dedicated volunteer for many, many years at the Maxwell A.F.B. hospital and later at Jackson Hospital. Liz was a long time active member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Retired Officers Wives Club. Liz is survived by her sister Barbara Sanborn of Bethesda, MD, her three children John R. Patterson (Katie) of Atlanta, GA, Susan P. Parker of Montgomery, AL and Patty P. Patterson (Ross) of Thomasville, GA Survivors also include 10 loving grandchildren, John Rice Patterson, Jr. of Gothenburg, Sweden, Mary Katherine Patterson of Atlanta, GA, Caroline Sims Patterson of Myrtle Beach, SC, Charles Walker Patterson of New York, NY, Sarah Grace Patterson of Atlanta, Georgia, Elizabeth Ann Smith (Jason) of Deatsville, AL, Gregory James Parker of Montgomery, AL, and Jeffrey Eugene Parker (Taylor), of Pike Road, AL, Kathleen P. Storves (Chris) of Plainwell, MI and Meredith P. Cantrell (Andy) of Atlanta, GA as well as 3 great grandchildren, Mackenzie Elizabeth Smith, Ashlynn Parker Smith, and Coleman Frank Parker plus a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends Tuesday July 28th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday July 29th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Leak Memory Chapel. A memorial service will be held Wednesday July 29th at 2:00pm at Leak Memory Chapel. Interment will follow at Alabama Heritage Cemetery.
