
Mrs. Ellen Elder Robbins, 89, of Montgomery, AL, was born January 25, 1928, in Philadelphia, PA. She died August 26, 2017, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Boyd Robbins and her parents Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Elder.
Mrs. Robbins grew up in Tenafly, NJ, and attended Colby Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire. After leaving college she met her future husband Lt. Edwin Robbins, who was on leave from the Navy and visiting his sister. The two fell in love, married, and moved to North Carolina, where Ed attended UNC Law School, Chapel Hill. After moves to Pennsylvania and Indiana, where their children grew up, the two settled in Pascagoula, MS.
While living in Pascagoula, Mrs. Robbins was an officer in Anola Club and participated in the planning of and modeling in fashion shows to raise money for local charities. She was also an avid bridge player and accomplished pianist. As an active member of First United Methodist Church, Pascagoula, she regularly attended the 8:30 service and participated in Broken Wings, a grief support group, after the death of her husband in 2002.
Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Mrs. Robbins moved to Montgomery, AL, to be near family. She transferred her membership to First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, and often played piano at Sunday afternoon church services at Cara Vita Village, where she enjoyed the company of friends.
She is survived by her daughter Linda R. McIntyre of Montgomery, AL; her son Steve F. Robbins and daughter-in-law Jane of Mt. Juliet, TN; grandchildren Jenny M. Cone (Matt); Jeff B. McIntyre (Rebekah) of Montgomery, AL; William E. Robbins (Randi) of Nashville, TN; Daniel S. Robbins of Chicago, IL., and great-grandchildren Matt and Millie Cone and Jackson and Ronald (Doc) McIntyre, of Montgomery, AL.
A graveside service will be held Friday, September 1, 2017, at 11:30 A.M, Machpelah Cemetery, 5122 Machpelah Road, Pascagoula, MS 39581, with Dr. Jeremy K. Pridgeon, Senior Minister, FUMC, Montgomery, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Henry Haywood Robbins Scholarship Endowment Fund, c/o Duke University Campus, Box 90581, Durham, NC 27708. (This endowment was established in 1989 by Mr. and Mrs. Edwin B. Robbins, in memory of his father, who attended Trinity College in the 1890’s and was a Methodist minister in Western North Carolina, and his brother H. Haywood Robbins, Jr., Duke University Law School class of 1932, an attorney in Charlotte, NC.); First United Methodist Church, 2416 W.
