
Euel Augustus Screws, Jr., a resident of Montgomery, died peacefully at home on November 1, 2014 at the age of 83. He was the son of Euel and Elsie Wallace Screws and was born and raised in Opelika, AL. After graduating from the University of Alabama, he entered the Army during the Korean conflict where he taught night combat, riflery and marksmanship. Following discharge from the Army, he attended University of Alabama Law School, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and being named a charter member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society and a member of ODK. After law school, he moved to Montgomery where he clerked with Alabama Supreme Court Justice Thomas S. Lawson and Judge Richard T. Rives of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He spent his over 50 year legal career with the firm of Copeland, Franco, Screws & Gill, becoming widely known for his dedication and compassion in the representation of his clients. Some of his many passions included hunting, fishing, gardening, competitive sailboat racing, politics, classical piano and cotton farming.
He was an active member of the Church of the Holy Comforter and later a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife Dane Thompson Screws; a son, Euel A. Screws III (Andrea), both of Montgomery; two daughters , Dane Screws Henshall of Arlington, VA and Anna Screws Smart (Joe) of McLean, VA; his sisters Joyce Hartung (Don) of Colorado Springs, CO and Annette Simmons (Alex) of Montgomery; his brother-in-law Michael (Mickey) Thompson of Prattville; seven grandchildren, Emma and Anderson Screws, Grace and Elsie Henshall, Cotter, Sam and Owen Smart and several nieces and nephews. He loved life. His integrity and generosity touched all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.
