

Frances Olivia Whitehurst Canterbury, 90, passed away July 7, 2012. She was born March 21, 1922 in Montgomery, AL. Funeral services, officiated by Dr. Knight, will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 11:00 with visitation at 10:00 at Leak-Memory Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Preceding her in death were her parents Samuel Christopher Whitehurst and Bertha Olivia Pebworth and her brother Deveraux Pollard Whitehurst. She is survived by her daughter Sherry K. George (Edward), Prattville, AL; nieces Diane Newton (Bobby), Millbrook, AL and Gloria Abrams (Charles), Demopolis, AL; her cousins Harold Gardner (Nita), Birmingham, AL, Fred Gardner (Dixie), Modena, Utah, and Tom Doron (Mary), Birmingham, AL; and an extended family of grand nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a loving and devoted mother who will be dearly missed by her daughter. She was an elegant lady with a giving, sweet spirit. Mrs. Canterbury retired after 45 years of working in the accounting department of Mercantile Stores and Citicorp Retail Services (Montgomery Fair/Gayfers Dept. stores). She was a member of the Retired Gayfer Girls where her creative talents supported many charity events. Mrs. Canterbury was a long time member of Heritage Baptist Church in Montgomery and a member of the Senior Choir. She enjoyed traveling with her friends from her church, work and the Crump Senior Services Center where she participated in activities during her retirement years. In the previous few years she lived at Charlton Place Rehab and Health Care where she found comfort in singing hymns to other residents and staff. Pallbearers are Larry Kelley, Randy Newton, Earl Stanley, Jimmie Tremontana, Gene Turner and Bruce George. The family would like to express their thanks to Baptist Hospice and the Neuroscience Unit staff at Baptist Hospital South and Charlton Place for their care.
