G.T. Stewart, age 91, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away January 14, 2024, peacefully in his home. A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery. The visitation will be followed by funeral services at 2:00 PM. Ron Kochik, Elder at Perry Hill Road Church of Christ, and Pastor Lamar Gibson will be conducting the service.
G.T. was born on August 12, 1932 in the small town of Flat Creek, Alabama in Jefferson County. After high school, he furthered his education and obtained a B.S. degree in Economics from Samford University. A man devoted to working hard and caring for his family, he worked a full-time night shift job while continuing his education. He went on to obtain an M.B.A and Ph.D. in Economics from The University of Alabama. After a short time as a professor at The University of Tennessee at Martin, he began a career at Troy University in 1965. He became chairman of the Marketing, Management and Economics Department in 1982, and held that position for thirteen years. He was a highly regarded professor to his colleagues and his students during his career. His students knew how important it was to not miss his class, and he often gave short pop quizzes to emphasize this. Sometimes the only question on the quiz was “Who was buried in Grant’s tomb?” He often laughed about how many students got that question wrong over the years. He retired from Troy University in 1995, after a thirty year career. A few years after his retirement, he was asked to teach at Faulkner University in Montgomery and thoroughly enjoyed his time there.
G.T. was not only very devoted to his career as an Economics professor, he was also a very devoted Christian husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He and his wife Helen were longtime members of Perry Hill Road Church of Christ in Montgomery. In recent years when he was unable to attend church services in person, he enjoyed being able to watch the services online from home. He treasured the relationships he had with his brothers and sisters in Christ. G.T. was a compassionate, loving Christian man who took great care and concern in his various roles as son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His unwavering devotion to them was evident in his strong relationships with them. Widowed from his wife, Nila, he married Helen Leverette and embraced her family as his own through the years. Already a devoted father, he also treasured his role as a grandfather, always quick to brag on their grandchildren. His favorite activities with all their grandchildren included having them over to swim, taking them to the movies, getting ice cream, and taking them on vacations to Disney World.
G.T. loved traveling, reading, and spending time with his family. He was a very tender-hearted man who cared deeply for his loved ones. He loved to tell jokes and to make people laugh, often by kidding around with them. Due to physical limitations over the last few years of his life he had caregivers that helped to take care of him. He received excellent care from them and enjoyed their company immensely.
G.T. will always be remembered very fondly by his family and close friends, who take comfort in knowing that he is now with his Heavenly Father and with loved ones who have gone before him. Flowers will be accepted, but donations may also be made in his honor to the Montgomery Area Food Bank, Children’s Hospital of Alabama, or Perry Hill Road Church of Christ.
G.T. was preceded in death by his parents, George Thelmer and Bernice Poole Stewart, his wife Nila Chambers Stewart, and his wife Helen Leverette Stewart. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Doris Tucker, and his brother-in-law, Bobby Tucker. He is survived by his son, Ricky (Karen) Stewart, his daughter Cindy (Billy) Jones, grandchildren Shannon (Joshua) Hodges, Megan (Lamar) Gibson, and Mallory Jones, great grandchildren Shawn Syed, Jensen Newsome, Zachary Hodges, and Jemma Gibson. He is also survived by his step children, Laura (Mike) Spivey, Matt (Alicia) Leverette, step grandchildren Will (Shelby) Spivey, Jay (Ashley) Spivey, Nelsey (Brady) Newman, Sadie, Kyle, and Howell Leverette, step great grandchildren Blaze Spivey, Shepherd Spivey, and Teddy Spivey.
