

George William (Wilmer) Hammond (89) died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at his home in Wetumpka, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his wife Lily Jo Hammond, son-in-law John Sewell, brother James M. Hammond, Jr, and sisters Marie Carwithen, Nellie Lushington, and Voncile Walker. He is survived by his daughters Billie Jo Sewell and Jane Guerin (Newton); his grandchildren Summer Sewell, Hammond Guerin (Robyn) and Hunter Guerin; one great granddaughter Emilee Sewell; brother Kelly Hammond (Betty) and sister Ella Lee Lynn; brother-in-law Hayward Summerlin (Martha Helen) and many nieces and nephews. Prior to moving to Wetumpka, Wilmer was a long-time resident of Montgomery and a member of Dalraida Church of Christ and Cloverdale Church of Christ where he served as Elder. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Free Masons. He retired from the L&N Railroad. He was an avid fisherman and hunter all of his life. The family wishes to give special thanks to Mary Jennings, Shirley Cleveland, and Angela Jennings for the loving care that they so graciously provided for several years, and especially during Wilmer’s illness. They have been a blessing to Wilmer and to the family. Additionally, the family would like to extend thanks to Hospice of Lake Martin for their generous care and support. Family will receive friends at Leak Memory on Sunday, May 22 from 5-7 pm. Family and friends will gather for graveside services at Montgomery Memorial Cemetery at 11am on Monday, May 23. Services will be officiated by the Reverend Doug Smith of Dalraida Church of Christ. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Dalraida Church of Christ or your favorite charity.
