Harold Bowman Nicrosi was born May 2, 1929 in Montgomery, Alabama. She was the daughter of Clare Holmes and William Iverson Bowman. Married for over 50 years, she was the wife of the late William Kelly Nicrosi. She is survived by her children Ginger Bowman Nicrosi, Indianapolis, IN, Dr. Katharine Nicrosi Schull and her husband, Dr. David Marshall Schull, Nashville, TN, and Michel Nicrosi and her husband Benjamin Harte Harris, III, Mobile, AL, grandchildren Katharine Vasser Schull, New Orleans, LA, Martha Mitchell Schull, Nashville, TN, and Benjamin Harte Harris, IV, Mobile, AL, sisters Clare Holmes Bowman Cardinal, wife of the late Dr. L.C. Cardinal, Montgomery, AL, Anne Bowman Upchurch and her husband W. K. Upchurch, Jr., Montgomery, AL, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School, Montgomery, AL, Class of 1946, and of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Lynchburg, VA, Class of 1950, with a B.A. in Latin. She did graduate work in English at the University of Alabama 1950 to 1951.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Montgomery, AL, and treasurer of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. She was elected seven times as a Deputy to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, during which time she was a several term member of the Standing Committee on Structure, chairing that committee in 1994. She was elected by the General Convention to the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church. She served as a board member of Episcopal Relief and Development, appointed by the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. She was a founding board member of Holy Cross Episcopal School. She was the first female member of the University of Alabama President’s Cabinet, a founding board member of the Society for the Fine Arts at the University of Alabama, and recipient of the University of Alabama Alumni Association 1979 Distinguished Alumna Award. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of Birmingham-Southern College. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and a White Rose Circle member. She was the president of the Junior League of Montgomery in 1969. She was foreman of the Montgomery County Grand Jury in 1976 and was the second woman ever to serve in that position. She was a Girl Scout leader, charter member of the Antiquarian Society, and worked at the Alabama State Senate for 30 years.
The service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the Church of the Ascension, 315 Clanton Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104. A visitation will be at 10:00 am in the Ascension Hall. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery will follow immediately after the service.
