Helen Cowles Goggans

Helen Cowles Goggans, 87, died Monday, August 31, 2015 at Monarch Estates in Auburn where she had been living for a year with her long time friend, Izzy, her faithful cat. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Goggans, and her parents A.D. Cowles, MD and Mary Bell Cowles. She is survived by her son George C. Goggans (Jan), ( Tampa, FL), and three granddaughters, Helen M. Goggans (Blacksburg, VA) and Ashley Goggans and Kelley Goggans (Auburn, AL).

Helen grew up in Ramer, AL, attended school there and graduated from Montgomery County High School. She began college at Huntington College in Montgomery at 17 years of age. She transferred to Auburn University after her freshman year where she met her husband and received her Bachelor of Education Degree. She later attended graduate school and obtained her Master’s degree while teaching. Helen taught Ninth grade English at Cloverdale Junior High School for many years and then taught Senior English at Robert E. Lee High School, where she was head of the department. Later she moved to the Montgomery Public Schools Central office where she was an Assistant Superintendent as the Public Information Officer until her retirement.

After retirement, Helen was a volunteer at Baptist South Hospital for 15 years where she was well respected for her diligence and performance by all of the staff. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gama.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Leak Memory Chapel on Saturday, September 5. Visitation will be at 10:00 A.M. and the service will be at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel. Pallbearers will be James Bozeman, Clinton Carter, Wiley Cutts, Ron Glover, Roy Glover, Tim Hatch, Bob Rocheleau, and Tyson Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Adair, Thomas Bobo, First United Methodist Church UMW Circle 2 members, First United Methodist Church Tower Class Members and Montgomery Public School Employees.
