Born on October 16, 1953, in Montgomery, Alabama, Hank was a lifelong member of the River Region community and a proud graduate of Stanhope Elmore High School. After earning his Master’s Degree from Troy University, he returned home to Stanhope Elmore where he dedicated his life to teaching, mentoring, and coaching generations of students and athletes.
Coach Furlow became a respected and beloved figure throughout the community during his many years at Stanhope Elmore High School. His passion for baseball and commitment to his players led the Mustangs to a State Championship in 2006, one of the many highlights of an extraordinary coaching career. Following his retirement, Hank was honored with induction into the Alabama Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame through the Alabama High School Athletic Association in recognition of his lasting contributions to the sport and to young athletes across the state.
Beyond athletics, Hank’s faith and servant’s heart shaped every aspect of his life. Alongside his wife, Sherry, he co-founded the Dream Center Montgomery, where they faithfully served and ministered to countless people in the community. He also regularly attended Living Waters Worship Center and White Dove Ministries.
While many knew him as “Coach,” Hank’s greatest joy in life was always his family. He deeply loved his wife of 46 years, Sherry, and was endlessly proud of his children and grandchildren. Whether he was sitting in the stands at a ballgame, sharing stories and laughter at family gatherings, or simply enjoying everyday moments together, his family was the center of his world. His grandchildren especially brought him immeasurable happiness, and he treasured every opportunity to support, encourage, and spoil them. His steady presence, sense of humor, and unconditional love created a foundation that will continue to guide his family for generations.
In retirement, Hank found joy in spending time with family, playing golf, watching ballgames, and occasionally returning to the field to coach recreational baseball. Whether in the dugout, on the golf course, or cheering from the stands, Coach Furlow never stopped investing in the people around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Helen Furlow, and his sister, Mary Lucy Crapps.
