Houston “Woodie” Harris, passed away on September 10, 2018 at the age of 98. Woodie was a member of the greatest generation and served our country in the Navy in the Pacific in World War II. He served as a radio operator onboard several ships during wartime. Upon returning home at the end of the war, he joined the Air Force and served in communications in European and Pacific stations. He retired from the Air Force as a Sr. Master Sergeant Communications Operator. After retiring from the USAF, Woodie went to work for the state of Alabama Department of Health in the vaccination of children. While working and raising a family, Woodie returned to school and graduated from college in 1972, the same year as his daughter, Ann Woodlynn. His favorite pastime was playing golf with his friends. Woodie was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 62 years, Billie Ruth Harris; his sisters, Mary Harris Dale, Francis Harris Morgan, Marie Harris Morgan; and his brothers, Willie Dorman, James Willard, and Johnny Harris. He is survived by his children, Michael L. Harris, Glenda Carol Harris, Ann Woodlynn “Lynn” Harris Pierson (Ken), Lisa Harris Mitchell (Keith); a brother, Luel M. Harris (Penny); a grandson, Jason B. Harris (Che); granddaughters, Leigh Fucci, Chloe Mitchell Garrison(Preston), Sarah Mitchell Nichols (Chris); four great-grandchildren, Jacob Harris, Joseph Harris, J.J. Harris and Dylan Nichols. Visitation will be on Friday, September 14, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Leak Memory Chapel with a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. He will then be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to the Bill Nichols Veterans Home in Alex City, Alabama, in memory of Houston Woodie Harris.

Woodie was my co-worker for many years at the Alabama Department of Public Health and always one of my beat buddies. I have missed seeing him in recent years since our retirements but have still thought of him on many occasions. Blessings to the family.
