James Vernon Godfrey, age 101, longtime resident of Montgomery, died peacefully in his home on October 13, 2021. He was preceded in death by Martha Sellers Godfrey his loving wife of 62 years before her death in 2008, parents Claude Hicks Godfrey and Minnie Myhand Godfrey, sisters Hilda Martin and Betty Ware, and brothers Montague Godfrey and Wyatt Godfrey. He is survived by his son Claude Stuckey (Ann) Godfrey (Hoover, AL), and daughter Deborah Carol Godfrey (Vestavia Hills, AL), grandson Jason (Christine) Godfrey (Sugar Hill, GA), granddaughter Carrie (Chris) Slavich (Trussville, AL), great grandchildren Jackson Godfrey, Miranda Godfrey, Hannah Slavich, and Madelyn Slavich, and many nieces and nephews.
Vernon was born in Society Hill, AL, served in the U.S. Army in World War II, and moved to Montgomery to enter Massey Business College. He was employed as a bookkeeper by Southeastern Publishing Company and later by Cohens. In 1952 along with his wife he joined Dalraida Baptist Church where they were early members of the new church where he served as deacon. He dearly loved his church and his family. He maintained a large backyard garden for much of his life. After retirement he enjoyed long walks, riding his bicycle, and his poodles Pepi and Jacque.
There are too many wonderful neighbors and friends to list them all. Their thoughtfulness, visits, and cards were much appreciated and always brightened his day. We want to pay tribute to Esther Haynes, Tasha Gaston, Thelma Blanks, and Shelia Harris, who so faithfully and lovingly provided care of Vernon in his older years.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Martin, Butch Godfrey, Tom Godfrey, Justin Godfrey, Josh Kessel, and Craig Holloway.
Visitation will be at 9:00 on Tuesday, October 19, at Dalraida Baptist Church, Montgomery Alabama, followed by the funeral at 10:00 at the church, followed by graveside services at Greenwood Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Rev. Randy Godfrey.
In lieu of flowers, love offerings may be sent to Children’s Harbor (Alexander City, AL) or Dalraida Baptist Church.
Deborah and Stuckey much appreciate your attendance to the service to honor their wonderful Daddy.
