

James Preston Tharp, 87, of Hope Hull, Alabama, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020 after an extended illness with Alzheimer’s. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Erwin and Mary Wiseman Tharp; brother, Carl Erwin Tharp, Jr.; and sister, Earleen Smith. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Mary Nell; two sons, Jim Wassner (Nora) and Carl Tharp (Cheryl); one daughter, Pam Thompson (Larry); one sister, Carolyn Lovelady; five grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was born in Hazard, Kentucky and retired as a Deputy Sheriff of Montgomery County in 1995. He was a proud Korean War Veteran, Alcazar Shriner, Mason, and member of the Capitol City Goldwing Motorcycle Club and Hope Hull United Methodist Church. Jim loved his family and friends, his motorcycles, and enjoyed living on his farm where he raised many farm animals over the years.
Due to the safety of everyone, during this time of the COVID-19 virus, the family has chosen a private viewing and visitation among the family and close friends, to be held at 10:00 am at Leak Memory on Thursday, May 14, 2020, with a graveside service to follow at 11:00 am in Greenwood Cemetery. Attendees should be mindful of social distancing.
The family would like to extend a word of gratitude to the Bill Nichols VA Home in Alexander City; First UMC Respite Ministry; Hope Hull United Methodist Church; and many, special and close friends for their endless support, love, and care throughout this time.
