John was born to Grady Latham and Roberta Stines Latham. In his younger years, he was a 1957 graduate of Gordo High School and went on to serve our country in the United States Army and Army Reserves. After being discharged from the military, he devoted his time to working on the family dairy farm. He earned his reputation of being an extremely hard-working man while staying humble and kind. You would never hear him complain, he simply did what needed to be done and loved tending to the farm as well as the animals. He bought Hall Brothers Farm in Montgomery, Alabama and moved there in 1992. He married Patricia Wilson on April 26, 1994, whom he loved and cherished dearly for the rest of his days.
To know Papa John, as his grandkids called him, was to love him. He was a man of few words. Even though he was not quick to say the word, there was never a question that Papa John loved his kids and grandkids very much with them loving him back just as much. His love language was to pick at them with his little sayings. They loved it too and would give it right back.
John was a member of Montgomery 1st Seventh Day Adventist Church where he attended for many years. When he was no longer able to attend church in person you could always find him watching it on TV. 3 ABN was his favorite channel. John was one that ministered to others through his actions more than his words. The Lord definitely shined through John. He Illuminated it!
