

Joyce Cummings Hobbs died of natural causes on December 18,2020 at her home in Montgomery, AL. Joyce was born on October 22,1927 in Lake Forest, IL. to Emilie Hoyt Cummings and Dexter Cummings. She was the eldest of three girls; Ruth Mead and Nancy Henry. She graduated from The Ethel Walker Boarding School and Vassar College . She was wed to Judge Truman McGill Hobbs for 66 years and was preceded in death by her parents ,her sister Nancy ,her son Dexter and her husband Truman . Survivors include her two daughters Emilie Hobbs Reid and her husband Bruce, and Frances Hobbs Rose and her husband William and son Judge Truman McGill Hobbs ,Jr and his wife Debbie and a daughter-in-law Nan Dunklin Hobbs Barganier and her husband Ron. She is survived by 11 grandchildren: Bruce Stanton Reid ,Jr, Phelps Hoyt Reid,Emilie Reid Parker, Katherine Rose Trotter,William Shepard Rose lll, Whitaker Boykin Rose, Margaret Bricken Hobbs, Dexter Cummings Hobbs, Jr, Truman McGill Hobbs lll, Samuel Francis Hobbs and Elizabeth Ramey Hobbs and 17 great grandchildren. Joyce loved her community and enjoyed serving on countless boards and usually at the helm as president. She was affectionately referred to as “ The General “ by family and friends. Her passions included, but were not limited to, Alabama Archives Foundation, Family Guidance Center of Montgomery, Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery, The Montgomery Academy,Montgomery Chamber Chorale, Montgomery Symphony Orchestra,Montgomery Zoological Society,Nature Conservancy of Alabama and North Carolina, River Region United Way,and her beloved Church Of The Ascension where she was the first woman on the Vestry and sang in the Choir for over 30 years. Joyce was named “A Woman of Achievement “ by the Montgomery Advertiser-Journal for her efforts to make a difference in her community.
Due to COVID 19 restrictions, graveside services will be held in mid -January for immediate family only. A memorial service at Church of The Ascension will be held at a later date . The family deeply appreciates the loving care and support of Dorothy Mallory, Lillie Franklin, Lela Jackson,Almetta Johnson , Mary Peoples, and Sandra Ross with the Jennings agency.
