Kenneth was the son of Vernon S. McGraw and Lula B. McGraw. He grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and, apart from brief periods in Mobile, Alabama, and Panama City, Florida, Montgomery remained his home for most of his life. He was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, class of 1965, and Auburn University where he earned a BS in Civil Engineering and a MS in Environmental Engineering.
Kenneth was a man of steady character, reserved in nature, thoughtful in his words, and calm in his leadership. He was not one to seek attention or be the loudest voice in the room. Instead, he made an impact through his dependability, wisdom, and willingness to quietly do what needed to be done. His philosophy was simple: regardless of the outcome, “it is what it is,” and you keep moving forward.
He served in the United States Air Force as a pilot from 1971 to 1975, where he flew C-130 aircraft. Following his military service, Kenneth built a career as a civil/environmental engineer specializing in water and wastewater treatment. His professional career included work with ADEM, BCM Engineering, McGraw and Company Engineers, and CH2M Hill. He enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of engineering and took pride in doing his work well, but his job was never the reason for his life. His greatest investments were in his family, his faith, and the people around him.
Kenneth was a longtime member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and trustee. He particularly valued teaching and the administrative work of the church. When he became aware of someone in the church who needed help, he would often organize and plan a team to take care of the need. He served not for recognition, but because there was something that needed to be done.
He and his wife, Sandra Alford McGraw, were married for 56 years, celebrating their anniversary on August 8, 2026. They were a team in every sense of the word.
Kenneth was a devoted father to his sons, Patrick Ryan McGraw and Jonathan Scott McGraw. As a father, he was steady, calm, and insightful. His family knew they could turn to him for wise counsel and steady leadership.
He especially enjoyed his role as a grandfather to Jack Henry McGraw, Mallory Elise McGraw, Adeline McGraw, and Vivian McGraw. He loved watching them learn and was always willing to help them learn something new. At the lake, he found particular joy in relaxing and watching his grandchildren enjoy the place that had become special to the family. Many of his happiest moments were simply being present for his grandchildren’s events and watching them grow.
Kenneth’s influence was not found in being the loudest or flashiest person in the room. It was found in his consistency, his thoughtful counsel, his calm presence, and his willingness to step forward when something needed to be done. He showed those around him that leadership does not require a spotlight, and that a person can make a lasting impact simply by being steady, dependable, and present.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Sandra Alford McGraw; his sons, Patrick Ryan McGraw (Julie) and Jonathan Scott McGraw (Caroline); his grandchildren, Jack Henry McGraw, Mallory Elise McGraw, Adeline McGraw, and Vivian McGraw; his brother, Vernon S. McGraw Jr.; and his sister, Mary Anita Dabbs.
He leaves behind a family, a church, and a community shaped by his quiet strength, thoughtful guidance, and calm leadership. He will be deeply missed and remembered with gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
