Maria Carmen Branum

April 24, 1924March 26, 2019

Maria del Carmen “Maria” Branum, 94, passed away at home in Friendswood, Texas on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 surrounded by her family. Maria was the epitome of class, grace and sophistication. Her smile and demeanor were welcoming and genuine. As a loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, she will be missed greatly. The family grieves her loss but celebrates her life.

Maria was born on April 24, 1924 in Madrid, Spain to Luis Carazo-Barbolla and Felisa Sobrino-Vela. Maria was the third of ten children. Upon completion of high school, she attended college and later worked at Torrejon Air Force Base (AFB) in Madrid. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Claybon Branum, on August 6, 1960. Always a determined and adventurous spirit, she made the trip from Spain to Vandenberg AFB in California, where they would start their married life. Their military love story continued for almost 30 years.

After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family lived in Spain for ten years, and in 1976, returned to the US to live in Montgomery, Alabama. Maria’s priority in life was always her family. She devoted her life to her husband and children and made a difference in their lives every single day. Her motto in life was to live life in the present, and to “not leave for tomorrow what you can do today.” She was an avid reader, and enjoyed sewing and cooking as hobbies.

Maria was predeceased by her husband, Claybon Branum, as well as her parents and 7 siblings. Survivors include her son Clay Branum (Lisa) and her daughter Aurora Mitchell (Jack); her loving grandchildren Arianna and Ryan Mitchell, who lived and grew up with their beloved grammie for 17 years, and Benton Blount, her newest grandson; her sister Aurora Carazo, and brothers Angel Carazo and Alberto Carazo, as well as many nephews and nieces in Spain.
