

Whitaker, Mildred M. passed away peacefully on November 25, 2011 in her home, at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. Whitaker, Jr; her brother, Sam Sumerlin; and her daughter-in-law Sharon (Richard) Whitaker. Mildred is survived by her two sons Richard “Dickey” Whitaker of Montgomery, and Ronnie (Shirley) Whitaker of Tuscaloosa; her sister, Edith Sumerlin of Montgomery; grandchildren Jenny Whitaker of Nashville; Kelly Whitaker of Montgomery; Chrissy (Mark) Whitaker O’Bryant of Tuscaloosa; Richard Whitaker, Jr. of Montgomery; Brett Whitaker of Tuscaloosa; and one great grandchild Berkeley O’Bryant. Mildred was born to Alma and Nathaniel Mooring. After growing up in Monroeville she graduated from Livingston University, which is now the University of West Alabama. Mildred had a civil service career as a personnel classification specialist at Maxwell Air Force Base for over 32 years. After retirement, Mildred began a second career as a journal clerk for the Alabama House of Representatives for 25 years. Mildred was a long-time member of First Baptist Church and felt great joy teaching Sunday school and volunteering in the children’s nursery. Mrs. Whitaker’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Sheila Thomas and Lisa Jiles for their loving care. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 11am at Leak Memory Chapel. Dr. Jay Wolfe, of First Baptist Church, will be officiating. Visitation will begin at 10am.
