

Patricia Phillips Roper “Patty”, age 86, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama died Wednesday July 16, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Bill L. Roper, sister Sue Phillips and brother Don Phillips. She is survived by her two daughters, Beth Stewart (Scott) and Kathy Shirley (Mike), her grandchildren Walker Harris, Sara Elizabeth Granthum (Will), Worth Harris and William Shirley, her great grandsons Roper and Dawson Granthum, her sister-in-laws Janis Phillips and Brenda Moorefield (Charlie), her nieces and nephews and many others she called family. A service will be held Sunday, July 20, 2025 at 3:00pm at First Baptist Church in Montgomery in the Stakely Sanctuary. Visitation will begin at 2:00pm in the parlor.
Patty was born in Bremen, Kentucky to Ish and Elizabeth Phillips. She was a graduate of Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tennessee. She was an elementary and kindergarten teacher for many years, then served as the Minister of Outreach/Inreach/Special Events at First Baptist Church for over 30 years where she directed thousands of weddings. She was the director of the Deaf Choir, worked with the visually impaired ministry, directed the second grade choir, sang in the Sanctuary choir, and was a chaperone for many Youth Choir Tours and Youth Camps. She was also a sign language interpreter for several plays at the Shakespeare Theater.
Patty will be remembered for her gracious hospitality, giving spirit and loving heart. She was known as “Gaga” to not only her grandchildren but most of their friends. She was a good friend to many and would always support them in times of need, usually with a loaf of her homemade bread. She was known for her stylish clothing and shoes but wouldn’t hesitate to play kickball with her grandchildren in her backyard. Her love for holidays and family traditions will be passed down for generations to come. She will be missed by many.
