Peyton Spottswood Mathis, III passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025 after a short illness, surrounded by family. He was born to Warner Livingston Mathis, Sr. and Hazel Mims Mathis on June 9th, 1949.
Named after his uncle Peyton Spottswood Mathis Jr., a World War II fighter pilot, Peyton was instrumental in the recovery of his uncle’s remains which are now interred at the Mathis family plot in Greenwood Cemetery.
Peyton lived life to the fullest. His favorite times were spent at Lake Martin surrounded by family and friends on the boat or back at the house cooking and listening to music by Jimmy Buffet. Although he considered himself a “cat person”, he came to love dogs over the years thanks to his “granddog” Gnarly. Generous and kind, Peyton made friends everywhere he went. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1968, where he was an avid swimmer, and then from Auburn University in 1971 with a degree in Aviation Management. He was also a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity where he made life-long friends. After graduation, he returned home to Montgomery to work for his father’s company, Southern Sash Supply of Montgomery, and then took over the business with his brother, Warner, in 1989. A life-long member of the Church of the Ascension, he ushered and rang the bells, confessing that he preferred standing and serving rather than sitting and listening.
Over the years, he developed and enjoyed many relationships with architects and business associates alike. He tried to retire in 2019, but found himself continuing to work because of the joy it brought him. People wanted to work with him because he was honest, knowledgeable and would go above and beyond to make sure their project was successful.
He is survived by his wife Deborah Isaac Mathis, and sons Peyton Spottswood Mathis IV (Michael) and Jefferson Warner Mathis (Victoria), his brother Warner Livingston Mathis, Jr. (Missy), sisters Marcia Mathis McCabe (David) and Hazel Mims “Mimmi” Mathis, nieces Anne McCabe Schilleci (Vince) and Mary Margaret Ivey Kinney (Ray), nephews John Warner McCabe, David Cammack McCabe (Lowrey), Warner Livingston Mathis, III (Mary Frances), Christopher Arthur Shearman, Jr., and sisters-in-law Rebecca Isaac Shearman (Chris) and Cynthia Jane Beaman.
There will be a Memorial Service at 11 am, Thursday March 6th, The Church of the Ascension, 315 Clanton Ave., Montgomery AL, visitation will follow in Ascension Hall. Burial at 2 pm, Greenwood Cemetery.
