FEBRUARY 16, 1945 – NOVEMBER 2, 2026
Ray Rushton Johnston died on November 2, 2026. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 16, 1945, and was raised in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, and graduated from The University of Alabama, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Watkins Cook Johnston and Edith Rushton Johnston, sister Edith Johnston Crook, and son Barton Lewis Griffin. He is survived by his wife, Helen Lewis Johnston; son, Ray Rushton Johnston, Jr.; daughter, Theresa Johnston Friedman (Jay); brothers, Watkins C. Johnston, Jr. (Carol) and Frank M. Johnston (Harriet). Ray was a beloved “Pappy” to two beautiful granddaughters, Maisie and Sloane Friedman.
Ray enlisted and served three years in the United States Army in Vietnam.
Ray helped launch and develop The Gulf Agency, which became the preeminent Alabama-based Managing General Agency. While Ray had a unique gift for marketing and developing trusted relationships with retail agents throughout the state, he was perhaps most respected in the industry for his skill in managing complex claims to mutually successful outcomes. These skills earned Ray the position of President of the American Association of Managing General Agents, the dominant national industry trade association of the time. The Gulf Agency was eventually acquired by American International Group, with whom Ray worked for several years following the sale. He eventually left AIG to form Sunbelt General Agency in partnership with Cincinnati-based American Modern Insurance Group. He was named a Senior Vice President of American Modern before retiring in 2008 when the company merged with Munich Reinsurance Corporation.
Ray loved spending time on the family farms, raising registered Brangus cattle, and driving his tractors to beautify the land in Letohatchee and Jasper, Alabama.
Ray never sought the limelight, preferring to operate quietly and effectively behind the scenes in both his personal and professional lives. He was widely respected throughout the insurance industry and cattle community, both in Alabama and indeed across the country. He was a friend and mentor to many.
Ray Johnston was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was also an outstanding outdoorsman – a great turkey hunter, deer hunter and angler.
For every trip that Ray planned, you could be assured that it would be the trip of a lifetime. For every conversation that Ray led, you could guarantee you would learn something new.
