

Montgomery, AL, and for the past 12 years lived in Hope Hull, AL.
As one of nine children of a Methodist Circuit Preacher, he lived in numerous parsonages
throughout Alabama and West Florida before being called to serve his country in WWII.
While in the US Navy, he maneuvered landing crafts delivering troops under heavy fire in what is
considered the largest Naval battle in history…the Battle of Leyte Gulf (Phillipines).
After the war, Bob earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Emory University.
He worked as a Regional Manager for A & P Grocery Stores covering area from Alabama to Texas
He then worked at Burroughs Office Machinery in Atlanta, New Orleans and Louisville, KY,
before starting his own company in Montgomery, The Bob Avinger Construction Company, in 1957.
He built many single family homes homes and State and Federal buildings throughout
Montgomery. He served as President of the Montgomery Home Builders Association and was
honored with Civitan of the Year for his charitable work.
Bob was a man of strong Christian faith, serving as Lay Leader, Lay Speaker, Choir member and
Sunday School teacher at Capitol Heights, Aldersgate, Frazer and Hope Hull United Methodist
Churches.
He was a devoted fan of the University of Alabama football team, an avid golfer and lifetime
member of Arrowhead Golf and Country Club.
He loved his family and was especially proud of his two granddaughters, Kinley and Karlin.
A man of strong Christian values and unwavering character, Bob truly deserved the
distinction of being known as a member of "The Greatest Generation"!
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Mae Carroll (Gordan) Avinger; daughter Kathy (Avinger)
and Steve Beck of Montgomery; grand daughters, Dr. Kinley Beck of San Antonio, Tx and
Karlin Beck of Montgomery ; step-children Cindy (Gordan) and Ricky Brooks and Dawn (Gordan)
and Robert Williams of Hope Hull; brothers Harold Avinger ( Hope Hull ) and Walton Avinger
( Houston, T X ) and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his
wife of 53 years, Nell (Graves) Avinger; parents Rev C. E. and Beth Avinger; brothers Frank,
Lewis, Kenneth (Deece), and Clarence (Butch) Avinger; and sisters Carolyn (Avinger) Wilson
and Bernie (Avinger) Rooks.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Leak Memory Chapel on Sunday, April 19, 2015, at
3:00 p.m. Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 p.m. prior to the service with burial to follow at
Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Our family wishes to express deep appreciation to Dr. Don Marshall
and his staff and Everyone at Gentiva Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be
made to Sav-A-Life Ministries or the Hope Hull United Methodist Church.
