Roland Houston Brooks

July 21, 1933May 18, 2020

Roland Houston Brooks, 86, died peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2020. He was born on July 21, 1933, in Montgomery, Alabama to John Houston and Nealie Brooks. He was an only child and a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School. Roland met and fell in love with Joyce McAllister, whom he married on August 10, 1956. They were happily married for more than 63 years.

Roland is a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served his country proudly during the Korean War. He began his civilian career as a Montgomery Firefighter before going to work and having a rewarding career as a Serviceman for Alabama Gas Corporation. He retired from Alagasco in 1996.

Roland's life was humbly devoted to God, Family and Country. He was a pillar of strength and was loved by all who knew him. His family was his pride and joy. To him, there was no greater accomplishment than to be a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He lead his family and served his country with dignity, strength, humility and honor. His grandchildren described Daddy Roe as: a man of few words but when he spoke you listened carefully, a true hero, a shoulder to lean on, always there to help, a good buddy and a gentle giant in their lives.

Roland is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Barrow (Bert) and Denise Allen (Mickey); five grandchildren that were his pride and joy, Jordy Cheney (Ben), Brook Byers (Mark), Blake Barrow, Jessie Adams (Daniel), and Chandler Barrow; two precious great-grandchildren, Neeley and Hannah Byers; one sister-in-law, Joyce McAllister; six nephews, and several cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce McAllister Brooks; his parents John and Nealie Brooks; and two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ruth Mixson (Dwight, Sr.), Reba Redden (Luther), and Ross McAllister, Sr.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
