She spoke fondly of her childhood and her love of living in the hills of Kentucky surrounded by many uncles, aunts, cousins, and her parents and grandparents. Her family moved to Ohio and lived there briefly before moving to Montgomery in her teenage years. She attended Sidney Lanier High School where she was a Majorette.
She and her husband Sherrill built and operated Gothard and Son Contractors for 52 years before retiring. She was a dedicated member of Catoma Baptist Church for many years where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served on various committees. She loved praying for missionaries, reading her Bible and Open Windows devotion, and listening to Dr. Charles Stanley on the radio.
Many summers were spent with family and friends at their cabin on the Alabama River. She eventually moved to East Montgomery where she joined Saint James Church and attended the traditional service. Her favorite thing in life was gathering with family to celebrate holidays and family birthdays and getting together with lifelong friends that became known as the Steel Magnolias. She was often heard saying “family is everything” and she meant it with all of her heart.
