The Rev. Russell Duane Killion, Servant of God died on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Rev. Russell D. Killion, 89, entered the kingdom eternal and is at rest with Jesus. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara Allgood Killion they have been residents of Montgomery for 38 years. Russell was a World War II Veteran and a Purple Heart Recipient.
Russell was born June, 14, 1926, In Fisher, Illinois, was pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany, in Montgomery. In addition to serving 50 years in pastoral ministry with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, he worked for over 20 years for Bradford Health Services as the Primary Counselor for Outpatients and Director of the Family Program for Inpatients. He also served the parishes of Grace in Universal, PA; Emmaus in Milwaukee, WI; Zion in Marengo, IL and Christ the King in Enterprise Al. He also filled numerous pastoral vacancies all over the Midwest and South. He mentored and guided fourteen young seminarians over the course of his career.
As a young college student at Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Springfield, IL, Russell was known for his prowess on the basketball court. He was also a prolific golfer with a single digit handicap.
Russell is the son of Daniel Jennings Killion and Mary Zoch Killion. In addition to his loving wife of 67 years, He is survived by his eight children: Ruth Ann Killion of Upper Marlboro, MD; Nancy Killion Jaissle (Robert) of Centerport, NY; Daniel Killion of Montgomery; Josie Killion Firestone (Kenneth) of Monroe, Tennessee; Mary Margaret Killion Carnahan (Rev. Mark) of Melrose Park, IL; Rev, Timothy Killion (Kathy) of Tuscaloosa, Al; Amy Killion Millo (David, Sr.) of Montgomery and Sarah Killion of Garland, TX. He has 28 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Russell was the last survivor of the Daniel J. Killion family preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Mary, brothers: Robert, Donald and Ronald Gene and his sister; Mary Ann Bratt, and was also preceded in death by his Grandson; Miles Benjamin Killion Carnahan.
In lieu of flowers, Russell requested donations be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association.
Visitation will be held at Leak Memory Chapel from 4pm-6pm on Sunday, May 22, 2016, with Celebration of Life service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 4475 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery Alabama, at 2pm, Monday, May 23, 2016. Online condolences can be made at www.leak-mc.com
