Russell Stewart Mathews passed away on Friday, October 2, 2020 at the age of 79. He served in the US Air Force and retired as Master Sergeant after 26 years and then went on to a 20 year Civil Service career initially working for the Air War College and then later in finance at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery Alabama. To advance his career and personal achievement, Russell graduated and received his Bachelor of Science degree at Auburn University Montgomery while in his 40’s. Russell’s Catholic faith and belief in God led him into church ministry and volunteered his time in the church and encouraged his family to do the same. He enjoyed bowling and was quite good at it that he played in many competitive tournaments. He also looked forward to the college football season and cheered for his college team Auburn University. Russell also loved to travel with his wife by his side visiting family all across the United States, as well as, finding adventures touring through European and Asian pacific countries. Russell and wife had many close friendships together; he could easily disarm you and make you feel instantly at ease with his infectious “Happy-go-lucky” personality.

Richard was preceded in death by his oldest son Russell Patrick Mathews and his daughter in law, Candace Mathews. Richard was a devoted and loving husband to Penafrancia; he is also by his sons Royce Paul Mathews and husband Johnny Johnson Mathews and Ross Mathews; granddaughters Mary Thomaston, Holly Mathews, Ashley Mathews, Crystal Mathews; grandson Russell Edward Mathews; great granddaughters Lyra Thomaston, Makaylynn Mathews; and daughter in law, Toinette Mathews.
