

Samuel Joseph McComas, age 84, went to be with the lord on August 3, 2024. His life was a living example of his faith in God, and he left the world a better place. Funeral services will be held August 9th, 11:00 am at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home with Mike Golson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.
Sam was born and raised in Ashland, Kentucky and was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend Sylvia Mills McComas, father Henry Clay McComis, Mother Lola Loretta McComis, and brother Richard C. McComis. Sam came to Montgomery in 1960 after a tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. He was last stationed at Gunter AFB. After completing his military service, he was employed with Hall Brothers Dairy in Montgomery and while there began his long career with Credit Unions in Alabama. In 1978 he was employed as Manager/CEO of Industrial Relations Credit Union. After 26 years in this position, he retired in January 2004 but remained very active in the Credit Union movement. Sam spent over 50 years in numerous Credit Union positions within Alabama and was nationally recognized as a leader for Credit Unions. He served for 25 years on both the Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee with Corporate America/Alabama Corporate Credit Union and served on the Board of Directors with the Alabama Credit Union League and Credit Union Service Centers. Prior to his retirement in 2004 he was instrumental in forming an annual Children’s Charity Golf Tournament benefiting Alabama based Children’s charities. He loved attending and being involved with his Sunday school class at Catoma Baptist Church. He was passionate about many sports, especially Kentucky basketball and Dixie Youth baseball.
He is survived by his sisters Johnnie L. McComis and Betty Y. Perkins, sisters-in-law Garnett McComis, Marilyn M. Aiken (David) and Lana Diane Jones, brother-in-law Daniel A. Mills, and numerous nieces and nephews. Sam had a large extended family with three very special and loving individuals and their families; Becky Lee (Danny), Landel Casey, and David Glenn Rainey.
The family would like to express appreciation to Amedisys Hospice and caregivers Jackie Kendrick, Ann Johnson, and Narvie Gandy for their devoted care.
Active pallbearers will be Darryl Boyett, Donovan Butler, Donnie Graham, Gary Graham, Erik Tucker, and Kevin Weir. Honorary pallbearers are the Men’s Three Sunday School class at Catoma Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Catoma Baptist Church.
A visitation for Samuel will be held Friday, August 9, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109, followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 AM.
