She and her twin brother, Robert, were born on November 22, 1949, in Tampa, Florida to Donald A. W. Douglas, Sr. and Nancy Lou Jones Douglas. The family then moved to Tallahassee, Florida when "the twins" were 2 1/2 years old.
Sandy graduated from Florida High School in 1967 and went on to receive both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Florida State University. She then moved to Alabama to work as an elementary school teacher. While working, she received her M.B.A. from Auburn University and went on to continue her career at the State of Alabama’s Office of the Attorney General.
During her time at the Attorney General's Office, Sandy was the head of the Utilities Division where she fought vigorously for the people of Alabama. She worked to obtain necessary services — such as power and telephone — for those in need. She also represented Alabama residents at the Public Service Commission to help keep utility rates reasonable.
Having completed a long and successful tenure there, she then transferred to the Alabama Youth Services Agency where she dedicated her talents and experience to helping provide rehabilitative opportunities and services for troubled youth.
Sandy loved her family and was an avid reader — especially of mystery thrillers. She would oftentimes finish a book a day. She also enjoyed researching her own genealogy and has compiled centuries worth of family history. She was lovingly known for her quit wit, sharp sense of humor, and her intense competitiveness in both card and board games. Rummy and Canasta were two of her favorites.
Sandy is survived by her son, Anthony Blake Roberts and his wife, Jacqueline, her grandson, Logan Wheeler Roberts, and granddaughters, Kaylin Danielle and Camaryn Ann of Southington, CT. She is also survived by her twin brother, Robert Emmett Douglas and his son Nathaniel Everett Douglas of Apple Valley, MN; her older brother Donald A. W. Douglas, Jr. and his wife Dianne of Tallahassee, FL, and their son Donald A. W. Douglas III and his wife Alexandra Stevenson Douglas of Atlanta, GA; as well as numerous cousins and extended family members across the country.
She was predeceased by her parents; her father dying when she was 3 1/2 years old, and her mother passing away at age 86.
She will be missed terribly and her impact on family, friends, and the state of Alabama will never be forgotten. Her final resting place will be surrounded by family at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa, FL. We love you.
